She was the third eldest of 10 children and second daughter of Willie Perry Sr. and Lillie Bell Perry. At a young age, Lena confessed Christ as her personal Lord and Savior, at First Missionary Baptist church. She later moved her membership to New Bethel Baptist church, where she served until her health began to fail. She was born and raised in Angleton, where she completed her high school education at Marshall High, there she would later met and marry her sweetheart I.B. Thomas whom she married at the age of 17.
